External rewards can do a lot of damage to intrinsically motivating tasks.
Intrinsically motivating tasks are the ones that are challenging, have a clear goal, a feedback loop, and require creativity, outside-the-box thinking, and there is no step-by-step instruction for accomplishing them which means there are meaningful choices available.
Mastery comes only when we are engaged. We are engaged when we are intrinsically motivated. We are intrinsically motivated when have autonomy, a higher sense of purpose, and experiencing flow state in our day to day.
A baseline reward that includes a fair compensation package and salary is absolutely necessary. Without it, we can’t get to the flow state, master something, and be fulfilled and engaged on a consistent basis.
If you are looking for ways to reach your maximum potential or more fulfillment in your life, or searching for strategies that lead to more productive and engaged employees at work, miss this book at your peril!
